Molded Case Circuit Breaker

HOW AN MCCB WORKS

A Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB) is a high-capacity electrical protection device designed to safeguard electrical systems against overload, short-circuit, and, in selected models, ground fault conditions. It is widely used in industrial, commercial, and large electrical distribution systems where higher current ratings and enhanced protection are required.

Working Principle

During normal operation, electrical current flows through the Line Terminal, internal contacts, and protection mechanism before reaching the Load Terminal. The MCCB continuously monitors the current flowing through the circuit while allowing uninterrupted power to the connected equipment.

When the circuit experiences an overload, the internal Bi-Metal Thermal Element heats up and gradually bends due to excessive current. This activates the trip mechanism, opening the contacts and disconnecting the power supply to protect cables and electrical equipment from overheating.

In the event of a short circuit, the Magnetic Trip Unit instantly generates a strong magnetic force that releases the trip mechanism. The contacts separate within milliseconds, interrupting the fault current before it can cause serious damage to the electrical system.

As the contacts open, an internal Arc Chute safely extinguishes the electrical arc generated during interruption, ensuring reliable and safe circuit isolation.

Protection Mechanism

Normal Condition: Electrical current flows normally through the MCCB, supplying power to the connected load without interruption.

Overload Protection: The Bi-Metal Thermal Element detects prolonged excessive current and trips the breaker automatically.

Short Circuit Protection: The Magnetic Trip Unit instantly detects high fault current and disconnects the circuit within milliseconds.

Result

The MCCB automatically isolates faulty circuits, providing reliable protection against overloads and short circuits. Its robust construction, higher breaking capacity, and dependable tripping mechanism ensure maximum safety, equipment protection, and uninterrupted operation in industrial and commercial power distribution systems.
